ISO 26000 was developed via a multi stakeholder process, after four years of preparation (2001 – 2004). Thousands of experts from 99 countries and 42 international organizations have been directly and indirectly involved for six years (2005 – 2010) in the development.

Major international and authoritative intergovernmental institutions took part in the development, and worked together on connecting ISO 26000 to their standards, conventions and tools regarding SR:
  • UN Global Compact Ten Principles
  • ILO (International Labour Organization)
  • OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) Guidelines
  • UN Framework Business and Human Rights (John Ruggie)
Also private instruments like GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) were involved and connected to ISO 26000.
