ISO 26000 was developed via a multi stakeholder process, after four years of preparation (2001 2004). Thousands of experts from 99 countries and 42 international organizations have been directly and indirectly involved for six years (2005 2010) in the development.

Major international and authoritative intergovernmental institutions took part in the development, and worked together on connecting ISO 26000 to their standards, conventions and tools regarding SR:
  • UN Global Compact Ten Principles
  • ILO (International Labour Organization)
  • OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) Guidelines
  • UN Framework Business and Human Rights (John Ruggie)
Also private instruments like GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) were involved and connected to ISO 26000.
